Jing’an leverages CIIE

to attract global investment

Jing’an District held its 2025 CIIE Trade Fair and Investment Promotion Conference on November 7 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, capitalizing on the momentum of the 8th China International Import Expo to draw international investors and buyers.

District Director Zhai Lei outlined the district’s strategy to boost business growth, leveraging its international profile, concentration of high-end services and mature service economy.

Jing’an plans to drive a “dual engine” of advanced services and technological innovation through three industry initiatives — fashion-led consumer innovation, “culture + tech” and “AI+” — while strengthening the business environment to provide companies with predictable, efficient support.

At the conference, Cargill, L’Oréal, Calvin Klein, Coach, Kanebo, doTERRA, PMI Foods and Eisai signed procurement and cooperation agreements. Jing’an’s CIIE trading group has ranked first in Shanghai for intended procurement value for seven consecutive years, with orders this year accounting for a quarter of the city’s total.

On the investment side, 14 companies, including Northern.tech, Gap and Aster, signed agreements covering technology, commerce, cultural media, energy and pharmaceuticals, underscoring the district’s appeal to international firms.

Debuts and breakthroughs

Jing’an companies launched new products, technologies and services at the CIIE. Through eight CIIE editions, participation has steadily increased from 16 to 53 companies. Long-term exhibitors like L’Oréal, Cargill, Sanofi, doTERRA, SYR, Vale, Mitsubishi Materials and Philips offer stability, while newcomers like PVH, Sherwin-Williams and Polymerize add energy. Returning firms like Crocs strengthen a collaborative ecosystem.

L’Oréal unveiled 26 new products, including three Asian-first brands and four beauty-tech innovations, and launched a joint medical research laboratory with Huashan Hospital. Marc Antoine Poulle, senior vice president of L’Oréal North Asia and China, described the CIIE as "a powerful symbol of China’s commitment to openness and innovation and a unique opportunity to introduce our latest products to Chinese consumers."

At CIIE, Calvin Klein showcased interactive activities focused on sustainability, and Vale showcased forest conservation and energy-transition metals. doTERRA introduced a 300-square-meter booth, new mugwort oil with Chinese elements, and investment plans. Grin showed immersive New Zealand displays, and SYR demonstrated a water treatment product with German technology and local manufacturing that could be exported to Germany.

Jing'an showcases industry strengths

Jing’an showcased its global services, beauty technology and lifestyle innovation strengths in three signature exhibition areas at the CIIE. The Global Service Providers Joint Exhibition Area connected service providers with global enterprises and showcased the district’s professional services ecosystem by showcasing top international legal, ESG, insurance and investment firms.

The Beauty Nova Tech Hub demonstrated the district’s “government + medical research + enterprise” model. L’Oréal China and Huashan Hospital opened a lab to commercialize high-precision skin scanners and home-use phototherapy devices. The hub launched the “Beauty Hub” initiative with WWD to help international beauty brands enter China and local startups enter global markets.

The district’s flagship platform for global product launches, Jing’an Grand Hall, expanded to 600 square meters this year to host lifestyle brands like Snow Peak, Riedel, Glencairn Crystal, Sandriver, THE HOLIDAY PROJECT and Joyce Beauty. The hall created a dynamic fashion ecosystem and promoted Jing’an as a hub for global trends, new consumer experiences, and integrated cultural, tourism and commercial innovation by combining international brand first launches with a gateway for local brands going global.

Zhangyuan’s “first launch + bonded” warehouse was notable. The heritage building’s 221-square-meter facility stores, appraises and displays jewelry, watches and luxury accessories for launch events. The CIIE featured four international jewelry brands: UTOPIA (Milan), CAPOLAVORO (Munich), MATTIOLI (Turin), and RUSSO CAMMEI (Naples), with UTOPIA and CAPOLAVORO debuting in China. Brands converted exhibits into bonded product sales in the hall using the warehouse’s efficiency and lower operational expenses. Post-expo product displays will institutionalize the event’s impact and strengthen Jing’an’s trade hub status.

Full-cycle strategy

Jing’an implemented a full-cycle approach to transform short-term expo exposure into sustained economic impact. Before the show, exhibitors visited Nanjing Road W. landmarks to see the district’s vibrant commercial scene and investor-friendly environment. The event promoted procurement deals, coordinated investment and the clustering of high-value and emerging industries.

The district explored trade, innovation and investment opportunities through roundtables and partnerships, including with the New Zealand Shanghai Business Association, which formed lasting partnerships. To maximize CIIE’s regional impact, Jing’an wants “one-time participation” to deliver long-term benefits.

Over eight years, Jing’an has moved from using the CIIE platform to shaping its impact. Adopting more open policies, innovative systems and refined services will strengthen Jing’an’s contribution to Shanghai’s goal of becoming a high-level, open, globally connected economy, improving its business environment, developing multinational headquarters and raising its economic profile.

Art Ripples’ turns Suzhou Creek waterfront

into a celebration of art and urban culture

Jing’an District has kicked off the 2025 season of "Art Ripples," transforming the Suzhou Creek riverside into a month-long celebration of art, performance and urban culture.

Running from November 6 through November 30, the festival throws light on how art interacts with public life and commercial spaces across Shanghai.

This year’s edition is organized into three main strands: art exhibitions, performing arts and art-commerce collaboration.

Leading galleries and cultural venues, including Bai Space Guang Er Warehouse, Fotografiska Shanghai, UCCA Edge, Suhe Haus and the Picasso Art Center, have formed a curatorial alliance, focusing on modern and contemporary art.

Through diverse artistic forms and media, the alliance presents a visual arts matrix that spans physical exhibitions, VR experiences and public installations, highlighting Jing’an’s role as a hub for international art exchange.

The season opened with the 15th Shanghai Photography Art Exhibition at UCCA Edge, on view through November 20, alongside "Larry’s List Chronicles: The Collector’s Residence" at Bai Space Guang Er Warehouse, running until November 25.

Partnering with ART021, the festival also features 141 galleries and projects from 22 countries, including 34 first-time exhibitors. To deepen engagement with Jing’an, ART021 has partnered with the Cc Foundation to create a specially designed "ARTYWALK" route, linking the district’s key art institutions.

The Performing Arts strand brings art into daily life, offering magic shows, open-mic nights, and pop-up theater at Shanghai Suhewan MixC World, Jing’an Moho Mall, and Blue Bottle Coffee at Zhangyuan Garden. Live music performances take place across CiTiC Square, Jiuguang Department Store and Jing’an Joy City, creating immersive urban experiences for visitors.

The Art-Commerce Collaboration section introduces partnerships with Dianping and Didi, providing themed art-walk routes and travel discounts to encourage audiences to explore Jing’an’s cultural venues throughout the festival.

Trendy Sports Festival

keeps Shanghai buzzing

The 2025 Trendy Sports Festival has kept Shanghai buzzing since October 4, spanning seven consecutive weekends through November 16. Across major commercial hubs, residents have enjoyed a dynamic mix of high-energy competitions, music, lifestyle experiences and interactive events.

Daning Park hosted the 2025 Asian University 3x3 Basketball Championship and Shanghai University 3x3 League opener from October 24–26. Over 200 athletes from 10 countries and regions competed in the three-day tournament with 28 university teams.

Huaqiao University captured the men’s title, with Ye Runfeng named MVP, while Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Guangdong University of Technology took second and third. In the women’s division, Peking University won the championship, with Wang Jiahui earning MVP honors, followed by Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Tsinghua University.

Rising talent Lu Zhuocheng from Guangdong, Park Jabez from Dankook University, and Saderinamin Parsa from Shahid Beheshti University were recognized as "Red Wings Asian Future Stars." This year’s edition officially joined FIBA’s global ranking system, marking Asia’s first intercontinental university 3x3 event, offering student athletes a pathway through international rankings.

From October 28 to 30, Suzhou Creek hosted a tug-of-war challenge with over 500 participants, featuring a weight-loss incentive system that tracks fitness progress through January 2026. The Suhe Market offered cultural crafts, wellness experiences and sustainable lifestyle stalls.

Dogs of all sizes joined their owners for a pet sports carnival at Shanghai Suhewan MixC World. Frisbee shows, jump challenges and pet-owner relays drew cheers from the crowd, adding a playful twist to the festival.

The "Hot Luck: Trendy Sports Brand Market" at Anyi Road featured skateboarding, fitness classes and a circular fashion market on November 8–9.

New creative lab

The 812 Julu Road has been transformed into Lab812 Youth Gravity Hub, a playground for young creators.

Jointly launched by the Jing'an District Committee of the Communist Youth League of China and Jing'ansi Subdistrict, Lab812 serves as a flagship space for youth culture and innovation, driving the district's growing "youth economy."

The hub aims to foster creativity, collaboration and community through programs like the Young Editors Project, Neighborhood Memory Archive and Cultural Talks. Acting as a creative anchor, it will link shops and cultural venues, turning the Ju Fu Chang area into a model "Youth Economy Street" where retail, art and community meet.

New initiatives are also empowering young entrepreneurs. The Youth Recharge Station offers mentorship and resources for young entrepreneurs, while the "Ju Fu Chang Youth Economy Guidebook" highlights local youth-led cafés, craft studios and boutiques, serving as a "treasure map" for exploring the neighborhood.

02
Style and fashion

A high-octane celebration of style, experience and sustainability was held on the Yongyuan Road pedestrian street.

Porsche 911 Dakar, Maserati GranTurismo, Lamborghini Urus SE, Ferrari 296 GTB, Lotus Eletre and Emeya, and Aston Martin Vantage were on display, delighting car enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

The event coincided with Shanghai Fashion Week, creating a unique crossover where automotive design met fashion innovation.

Visitors experienced a fusion of luxury, with sleek cars and fashion trends, transforming Yongyuan Road into a hub of style and glamour.

03
Robot Fun

To mark the Double Ninth Festival, an annual celebration honoring the elderly, 30 students from Shanghai Ling Nan Middle School visited Heyang Pengpu Nursing Home with a humanoid robot. The robot quickly became the star with lively dance moves and a playful voice, performing solo and inviting residents to join in, creating a warm, joyful atmosphere.

Students also sat alongside the elderly to learn how to make tangyuan (glutinous rice dumplings), sharing stories and engaging in conversation. The day fostered intergenerational connections and brought festive cheer to the nursing home.

04
“Chill in my Jing’an”

"Chill in My Jing’an," an initiative highlighting the urban transformation of Jing’an through the perspectives of overseas youth, recently took place.

Six Shanghai Theater Academy students from Malaysia, Russia, Greece, Ghana and Kazakhstan joined a 3.5-kilometer citywalk led by Qian Xiaoyan, author of "Lonely Planet Shanghai," tracing Jing’an from shikumen alleyways to the bustling Nanjing Road W.

Participants compared historic photos with modern streetscapes, sampled reimagined local treats and joined hands-on workshops. Morning calisthenics at Fudeli Park saw them in retro blue school tracksuits, while a culinary session turned mantou into "Chinese burgers" using ingredients from Wang Jia Sha, Kaisiling and Lifeng.

The route concluded at the Shanghai Printing Typeface Museum, where students created collages spelling out "Jing’an" ("静安") and shared their feelings.

05
“Home to Luxury”

Plaza 66 launched its "Home to Luxury" extravaganza this month, combining art, music and multibrand collaboration to create an immersive shopping experience.

The event brought together high-end brands including Van Cleef & Arpels, PRADA and Bottega Veneta, showcasing hundreds of new releases and limited-edition items. By uniting multiple brands under one coordinated platform, Plaza 66 created a dynamic ecosystem of collaboration, shared resources, and mutual inspiration.

Beyond offering a unique consumer experience, the initiative reflects Plaza 66's innovative approach to retail and Jing'an's strategy to foster a synergistic "brand-mall-district" ecosystem. The campaign aims to accelerate high-end consumption recovery while enhancing the district's luxury retail profile.
