昨天，屠呦呦又获奖了！

22日，总部位于法国巴黎的联合国教科文组织公布2019年度联合国教科文组织-赤道几内亚国际生命科学研究奖（UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences）获奖名单，共3人获奖，其中包括来自中国的屠呦呦。

联合国教科文组织在公告中说，中国中医科学院教授、2015年诺贝尔生理学或医学奖获得者屠呦呦，因其在寄生虫疾病方面的研究获奖。她发现的全新抗疟疾药物青蒿素在20世纪80年代治愈了许多中国病人。

Prof. Youyou Tu of the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, laureate of the 2015 Nobel Prize for Medicine, is recognized for her research into parasitic diseases. She discovered an entirely new anti-malarial treatment, artemisinin, which made possible the treatment of thousands of patients in China in the 1980s.    

 

本世纪初，世界卫生组织推荐将基于青蒿素的复合疗法作为一线抗疟治疗方案，拯救了620万人的生命，使非洲疟疾致死率下降66%，5岁以下儿童患疟疾死亡率下降71%。

Since the turn of the century, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been recommending artemisinin-based combination therapies as the first-line treatment for malaria. These combination treatments have saved 6.2 million lives reducing malaria mortality in Africa by 66%, and by 71% among children under 5 years of age.    

联合国教科文组织官网称，该奖项旨在奖励提高人类生活质量的杰出生命科学研究。今年是该奖项的第五届。

This is the fifth edition of the Prize, which rewards outstanding scientific research projects in the life sciences that have led to an improvement in the quality of human life.  

另外两名获奖者分别是来自美国的凯托·洛朗森（ Cato Laurencin）教授，以及来自爱尔兰的凯文·麦圭根（Kevin McGuigan）教授。

凯托·洛朗森教授由于在生物材料再生工程的临床应用、干细胞科学等方面的创新工作获奖。凯文·麦圭根教授研发的太阳能消毒技术帮助非洲和亚洲等地的人们获得了干净饮用水。

据悉，颁奖仪式将于2020年2月在位于埃塞俄比亚首都亚的斯亚贝巴的非洲联盟总部举行。

   外媒称她为“20世纪最伟大的科学家之一”  

BBC曾将屠呦呦列为“20世纪最伟大的科学家”候选人之一，与居里夫人、爱因斯坦和图灵并列。

她入选的三大理由分别是：艰难时刻仍秉持科学理想，砥砺前行亦不忘回望过去，她的成就跨越了东方和西方。

BBC的一个纪录短片更是高度评价屠呦呦，“如果用拯救多少人的生命来衡量伟大程度，那么屠呦呦无疑是史上最伟大的科学家之一！”

If you measure greatness in terms of number of human lives saved，then there is no doubt at all that Tu Youyou is one of the greatest scientists of all time.
